This paper discusses an action research seminar for doctoral students, which reaches 10 years in 2025, detailing how to design a seminar that fosters Bildung (Levin, 2012), a holistic learning process of personal and professional development. This seminar is a space for open dialogue where all participants feel safe expressing their opinions and engaging in critical discussions. They learn this through five main mechanisms built into the seminar: (1) prioritizing experience-based knowledge, (2) fostering different modes of knowing, (3) integrating structured reflection, (4) engaging in academic discourse, and (5) emphasizing the importance of relationship building. Ultimately, the goal of this seminar is to develop researchers who can use their research experiences to make meaningful life choices and contribute to knowledge and sustainable community well-being.
